KMi members were very much in evidence at the awards ceremony held at the Asian Semantic Web Conference last week, winning both the prize for best research paper as well as the best poster award.
After being postponed in December 2008, due to the political situation in Thailand, the third ASWC took place last week at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok. Researchers from all over the world gathered there to present their latest results on various topics related to the Semantic Web.
The award for best research paper went to the paper entitled "Identifying key concepts in an ontology through the integration of cognitive principles with statistical and topological measures". This paper is authored by our own Silvio Peroni, Enrico Motta, and Mathieu d’Aquin and presents an innovative method for automatically extracting the best concepts which describe an ontology. This approach has been shown empirically to correlate with the selections made by human experts. This work, carried out in the context of the EU-funded OpenKnowledge project, is potentially very significant, as it may lead to new ways to visualize and navigate ontologies, as well as new approaches to ontology evolution, ontology matching and ontology-driven data classification.
The best poster award went to A Ranking-Driven Approach to Semantic Search, authored by Yuangui Lei, Victoria Uren, and Enrico Motta. This work, carried out in the context of the EU-funded X-Media project, presents a new method to ranking both the semantic interpretation of keyword-based queries as well as the results returned by such queries. Interestingly, none of the authors of the poster could make it to Bangkok, so it fell to another KMi-er, Andriy Nikolov, to present the poster. Clearly Andriy did such a great job that the absence of the original authors did not prevent the assignment of the first prize to our team.
Mathieu dAquin and Andriy Nikolov collected the prizes at an appropriately swanky awards ceremony and duly celebrated with excellent Thai food and traditional dances.
