Best Paper Award in Ontology Matching

KMi’s Marta Sabou, Mathieu D’Aquin and Enrico Motta have been awarded the best paper prize at the highly prestigious Ontology Matching Workshop (OM-2006), which was held in Athens, US and was co-located with the 5th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC 2006. The development of effective techniques for Ontology Matching is a very important research area and a key pre-condition for enabling large scale exploitation of the emerging Semantic Web. The Ontology Matching series of workshops is the premiere event in this area and, as a result there was some stiff competition, with twenty-two papers submitted, only six of which were accepted for presentation. The paper presented by Marta and her colleagues is entitled “Using the Semantic Web as Background Knowledge for Ontology Mapping” and proposes a novel approach to Ontology Mapping, which exploits the emerging body of semantic information available on the Web to support the mapping process. This work has been carried out in the context of the NeOn and OpenKnowledge projects and is part of a wider set of research activities in KMi, which aim to produce new methods and tools to effectively exploit the emerging large scale semantics on the Web.
