Society of the Query: Talk on Search in Assessment

Second year PhD student Simon Knight is currently at the 2nd Society of the Query conference in Amsterdam at which he will give an invited talk on the epistemic implications of search engines in education. The conference is organised by the Institute of Network Cultures and builds on their wider work which takes social science, humanities, and arts perspectives on digital networks such as search tools. Simon’s talk discusses the need to consider assessment, search tools, and user capabilities in tandem noting that some assessment systems (e.g. Denmark) permit the use of the internet in exams, and there are developing technical approaches (e.g. Diversity Aware Search techniques) to addressing concerns around confirmation bias in search. A video of the talk will be linked from the conference website shortly and a reader chapter based on the talk should be available in early 2014.
